Nematodes contain two main longitudinal ganglial chords which extend one dorsally and the other ventrally beneath the epidermis. There might as well be nerves lateral to such main chords. The nervous system of a free-living nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans, has been well-studied in neurophysiological research and represents 302 neurons.

The nematode C. Elegans was the organism employed in the research on the genetic regulation of apoptosis and organogenesis whose researchers won the Nobel prize of Medicine in the year 2002 (Horvitz, Brenner and Sulston).
