The medullary piece of the adrenals secretes hormones of the catecholamine set: adrenaline (also recognized as epinephrine) and noradrenaline (also recognized as norepinephrine). also their hormonal function, adrenaline and noradrenaline operate as neurotransmitters too. By vasodilation they enhance the blood supply to the muscles, the brain, and the heart and by vasoconstriction they decrease the blood supply to the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, the skin. Materials such as adrenaline plus noradrenaline which promote vasodilation or vasoconstriction are termed vasoactive substances.
