Functions of phospholipids-carbohydrate-proteins
What are the relevant functions of phospholipids, carbohydrate and proteins of the cell membrane?
Expert
Membrane phospholipids contain a structural function; they build the bilipid membrane which comprises the cell membrane itself.
Membrane proteins contain several specialized functions. Several of them are channels for substances to pass via the membrane, others are receptors and signalers of information, and others are enzymes, others are cell identifiers (or cellular labels) and there are still such that participate in the adhesion complexes among cells or between the interior surface of the membrane and the cytosketeleton.
Membrane carbohydrates, related to proteins or to lipids, are found in the external surface of the cell membrane and they have in common labeling functions for recognition of the cell by other cells and substances (for illustration, they distinguish red blood cells in relation to the ABO blood group system), immune modulation functions, pathogen sensitization functions and so on.
