Water enters the roots because of root pressure and a water column is maintained in the xylem from roots to the leaves. The most significant factor which makes water ascend is transpiration, mainly in leaves. As leaves lose water by the transpiration their cells tend to attract more water creating suction in xylem. The cohesion property of water which keeps its molecules bound (one pulls the other) by hydrogen bonds aids the procedure.
