In majority of the amphibian species, fecundation is external. This trait is common in bony fishes too and it proove that the reproductive system and the embryonic development of amphibians are inherited from the osteichthyes. Although they have external fecundation, amphibian female and male copulate to stimulate for the liberation of egg and sperm cells. This process does not illustrate internal fecundation as the gametes unite in the water.
