The placenta is not the permanent gland of endocrine system though it also performs the endocrinal function. The placenta generates the progesterone and estrogen. It too secretes the human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG, which acts in the same to the hypophyseal LH), human placental lactogen, same as that of prolactin and stimulant of mammary glands, and a series of the hormonal peptides similar to hormones of the hypothalamus-hypophysis axis.
