Twins are simultaneously produced (within the mother’s uterus) offspring. Twins categorized according to zygosity as monozygotic or as dizygotic twins.  Monozygotic twins, also called similar twins, are those originated from single fertilized ovum (thus from one single zygote); monozygotic twins are genetically identical; it means they have identical genotypes and are essentially of the same sex. Dizygotic twins, also called fraternal twins, are those who generated from two different ova fecundated by two different sperm cells; so they aren’t genetically identical and they aren’t necessarily of same sex.
