Melanin is a pigment which besides coloring the skin, the iris of eye and the hair, as well works as a filter against ultraviolet radiation of the sun therefore protecting the body against the harmful consequences of this radiation (mostly burns and carcinogenic mutations).

Melanocytes are the cells influenced in one of the deadly skin cancers: melanoma.
