Amphibian circulation
Why the amphibian circulation is categorized as double and incomplete?
Expert
The amphibian circulation is double since it is composed of the systemic and pulmonary circulations: respectively, heart-lungs-heart and heart-tissues-heart. As, the amphibians only have one ventricle within the heart, the venous blood is taken from tissues and arterial blood which is coming from the lungs are mixed in the ventricle which then pumps the mixture back into the systemic and into the pulmonary circulations. Amphibian circulation is categorized as incomplete since venous and arterial blood mix within the circuit. The blood oxygenation in amphibians takes place in systemic circulation as their skin is a gas exchange organ.
