In arthropods the respiratory system is open (or lacunar). Blood, as well termed as hemolymph, is pumped by a heart and falls into the cavities (or lacunas) irrigating and draining the tissues. All arthropods contain a heart. Arachnids and crustaceans contain respiratory pigments. Insects do not contain respiratory pigments as their blood does not carry gases (in them gases reach tissues and cells via tracheal structures).
