For one point, indicate whether the following statement is True or False and include a sentence explaining your reasoning and which of the readings validates it.

1. Recent research indicates that syphilis was not originally a sexually transmitted disease.

2. The nature of syphilis has changed over time, from the disease spread through any skin-to-skin contact known among natives of the Caribbean and South America to the disfiguring disease spread primarily through sexual intimacy experienced by 15th century Europeans to the modern form in which skin pustules are much less evident in the early phases.

3. Syphilis is caused by a bacterial infection while AIDS (acquired immune disease syndrome) manifests in the final stages of infection by a virus.

4. Although syphilis and HIV/AIDS have occupied the majority of these readings, other STIs such as chlamydia, HPV (human papillomavirus), and gonorrhea are widespread and can also cause health issues including painful infections, sterility and cervical or anal cancer.

Point short essay question; your answer should be 2-3 paragraphs long.

1. Although syphilis and HIV/AIDS were first recognized centuries apart, there are some historical similarities in how people initially understood and explained these new, terrifying diseases. Please identify and thoughtfully discuss two similarities in how the existence and/or impact of these diseases were rationalized when they first appeared in Europe and/or the United States.

2. You have been invited to give a potential funder a 3-paragraph explanation of your proposed intervention to arrest the spread of sexually transmitted infections.

3. Be as specific as possible while being brief; provide the kind of detail that would place your submission among the finalists who would be invited to submit full proposals, timelines and budgets. If useful, you may limit your solution to a specific STI or group of people impacted by STIs.

4. Drafting proposals for funding may be a completely new idea to some of you. I'm happy to brainstorm approaches and strategies in class, via email, etc.

Note: your 3 paragraphs do not need to demonstrate the need for the intervention-concentrate on explaining how your solution would be implemented. For example, we might agree that "education" is needed, but if that's your starting point, identify where and how you would direct that education: what kinds of people, and are they most in need of general knowledge, or would you focus on education about specific STIs? what kind of education would be most effective with those people? How would you implement the design and delivery of that education?
