Write a 1200 word analysis paper over The Passage of the 19th amendment.
The assignment consists of an analysis of one of four historical documents: 1) Woodrow Wilson and the debate about joining the League of Nations in 1919, 2) Russell Baker, Growing Up., 3) Ethel Waters, His Eye is on the Sparrow, (4) the 19th Amendment in Tennessee, voices in favor and against in 1920.
The objective of the assignment is to demonstrate an analytical understanding of the document, the people who wrote and read them, and the issues of their day. A thorough reading of all four should narrow your interests to one document. I recommend reading that one several times accompanied by underlining or note taking on the most significant points. Having done that, ask yourself a series of questions about the document: how does it show the personality, the assumptions, and the values or biases of the author? These documents are designed to persuade in one way or another. What means or tools are used to accomplish that? Consider the arguments and the evidence marshaled in their behalf. Are the arguments persuasive or can you find holes in the logic or the nature of the evidence? What is the author attempting to accomplish in writing: i.e. what is his/her purpose? Does the evidence and logic show a pattern of thinking fundamentally different from a current day perspective, or are the two points of view (then and now) similar? Do not treat the documents as something to be affirmed or denied, accurate or false, good or evil. Treat them as reflections of a way of thinking and of an age that you are attempting to comprehend on its own terms. These questions are suggested merely to get your thinking process started; they are not to be construed as a literal outline. Above all, do not write a summary, and by that I mean simple paraphrasing of the author's main points. You must consult at least two sources from the list of library reference sources (or others, including Web sources, of your choice) and footnote them in your paper, the style of footnoting or end noting of your own choice. You need not cite anything that appears in the original document. But remember, this is an analysis paper, not a research paper or a biographical sketch, so the sources may help you comprehend the author or times but cannot substitute for your own thinking. DO NOT CITE WIKIPEDIA! Feel free to use it for general information or leads to other sources, but Wikipedia is not appropriate for academic research. When you run out of things to write about, always return to the text. Use Internet sources but carefully.
The passage of the 19th amendment took almost 75 years from the time of the Seneca Falls Convention in 1847 to passage in 1920. The amendment had passed Congress as a kind of thank you to the women of America for their work and patriotism during the First World War. And the amendment passed easily in states where women were already voting in local elections.. But the amendment ran into trouble in the South because tradition dictated certain roles for women that did not include voting or being independent. The debate in Tennessee was especially spirited because if it passed here, women could vote in the 1920 presidential election. Votes for women was especially popular with African-Americans and it's important to explain why. On the other hand more traditional citizens saw no need for women voters and they used their values to explain why not. You have to take all sides in this debate seriously.
