Write an essay on Cultural Rights for African Americans.

The 1963 publication of Leroi Jones's Blues People coincided with a number of remarkable events, not the least of which was the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom at which Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I have a dream" speech.

African Americans had won significant gains since the end of WWII, though much work remained ahead and whites nationwide continued to strenuously resist African American equality.

Leroi Jones's book suggests that African Americans' demands for civil rights included defending their cultural rights as Americans as well.

What cultural rights does Jones defend, and in what ways would/could/did these rights complement the legal rights won by the Civil Rights movement over the course of the 1950s, like those won in Brown v. Board of Education, at Little Rock, Arkansas, and with the Montgomery Bus Boycott?
