Write an essay on Art MUSEUM PAPER by Dr. A. Williams
1.Identify the work by giving its title, artist, currentlocation (museum), country, city in which it was made( if known), date, and medium (oil on canvas, etc.) Use the museum label for identification.
2.What is the subject (or story) being depicted here-in other words what are we being presented with?
a.How has the artist used the formal elements (color, light and shadow, line, placement of figures, scale of figures, depth, texture) of painting or sculpture to render the subject (or tell the story)? If a particular scene being depicted, how has the artist chosen to present it to you? What is he or she emphasizing? What is the mood being expressed? How do you know what is going on in the painting-what clues does the artist give you in order to allow you to understand the theme or subject of the work? How do the medium and materials affect the results?
b. In writing your paper, try not to describe aimlessly. Each of the formal elements contribute in some way to the revelation of the theme of the painting. Your conclusions about the work of art should be based how the formal elements (i.e. line, color etc) are manipulated in order to convey a certain impression.
3.If the work has a biblical or mythological subject, you should read the appropriate section of the bible or a mythological dictionary. Can the work becompared to other works of the same time and location studied in class? Place the work in its appropriate historical and geographical context.
