In the excerpt from The Book of the City of Ladies by the medieval author Christine de Pisan that you read, the author begins by explaining how saddened she is by the many portrayals of the immoral and inconstant nature of women.

Christine is disheartened by this state of affairs because she knows of many women of virtue, yet the result of all these attacks causes her to ask God why she was not born a man "so that all my inclinations would be to serve you better."

A flash of light startles her, and three allegorical figures representing Reason, Rectitude, and Justice, appear to her. These women tell her to build the City of Ladies and populate it with the noblest and most accomplished women the world has known.

The city is to serve as a safeguard against the cruel accusations often leveled at women as well as a reminder of the true and laudable nature of women.
