Assignment: Interview Design & Practice

Purpose
An interview is arguably still one of the most important components of the recruitment and selection process. Conducting a successful interview requires skill, practice, and preparation. Preparation includes familiarizing yourself with the job description, the candidates resume and selecting relevant interview questions. Appropriate questions are the key to getting to know the candidate and finding out if he/she has the requisite education, knowledge, skills, and competencies to perform the role you are attempting to fill.

Since more and more companies conduct interviews or pre-screening conversations remotely, we will ask you to organize your interview online.

How to Proceed

1. You will be assigned a partner, and you will each prepare and conduct a mock interview. To make this scenario as realistic as possible, please exchange the job descriptions and interview questions you have prepared in previous assignments with your partner. The intended result is that you will each be interviewed for the role that you have worked on and thus are familiar with. You will not have other person's resume, so if any of the prepared interview questions are not applicable, please skip them. The interviews should follow this general format:

- Establish rapport.
- In lieu of a resume, the candidate should provide a general overview of his/her past work history (excluding the position he/she is being interviewed for, as applicable), skills, and education.
- Ask the prepared questions.
- Wrap-up.

2. Meet with your assigned partner and conduct the interview. Professionalism is one of the elements you will be evaluating each other on ensure you are properly attired for the occasion. Please remember that this is a learning opportunity as much as it is an assignment.

3. The next step of this assignment is for each participant to provide the other with some feedback on his/her performance, both as an interviewer and as the applicant. Send your feedback via email to your partner and the instructor Provide a specific subject line in your email so the recipients know what your email is regarding, e.g. HRM0122 Interview feedback for (Name of partner).

4. Finally, write a reflective report of 500 (+/- 10%) words on the interview process and your performance as an interviewer and participant. Submit the report to the Assignment 4: Interview Design & Practice dropbox.
