#1 Scenario: Your Most Admired Leader

Identify someone you admire as a leader. This can be anyone now or in history who has served a leadership role. Considering the concepts discussed the course materials, answer the following questions:

• Why did you select this individual as a leader you admire?
• What are/were this leader's sources of power?
• What influence tactics does/did the person use?
• Which traits does/did the leader exhibit?
• What behaviors does/did the person exhibit?
• Considering the course concepts, what type of leader do you aspire to be?

#2 Scenario 2: I wanted to take this opportunity to review and discuss some leadership styles. • Autocratic leadership
• Bureaucratic leadership
• Charismatic leadership
• Democratic leadership or Participative leadership
• Laissez-faire leadership
• People-oriented leadership or Relations-Oriented leadership
• Servant leadership

• Transactional leadership
• Transformational leadership

#4 People differ in their behaviors, motivation and personality. I did want to point out that one motivational theorist named Abraham Maslow argued that humans possess unique qualities that enable them to make independent choices, thus giving them control of their destiny. Maslow developed a hierarchy of needs, which states that people's behaviors are guided or motivated by a sequence of needs. As the needs are achieved, they move on the next until they reach the top of the pyramid. He also stated that not everyone made it to the top of the pyramid and that most people stayed between level 3 and 4. Thoughts?

#5 Charismatic leaders use their personality and charm to lead people. They are also said to eloquent communicators. Some of the most famous leader fall into this category. Two interesting comparisons are listed below, and they are both two different extremes.

John F. Kennedy

Arguably the most charismatic President of the United States, John F. Kennedy came from a powerful family, and was blessed with good looks in addition to his personal charisma.

Due to the charisma and style of John and Jackie, the Kennedy White House became known as Camelot. Alan Jay Lerner, Kennedy's Harvard classmate, even wrote a hit song "Camelot" for the Broadway musical, which was a personal favorite of President Kennedy.

Charles Manson

It was mentioned earlier that charismatic leaders could also use their influence for less-than-honorable purposes; the classic example of this abuse is Charles Manson.

Some people believe it was a combination of the drug LSD coupled with Manson's charismatic personality that allowed him to manipulate others. In the end, Susan Atkins along with other members of the Manson family, were found guilty of the murder of the 26-year-old movie actress Sharon Tate and four others. Thoughts?
