Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow is a work of historical fiction set during the Progressive era - the age of "ragtime."

What does the novel tell us about this historical time period? In 3-4 pages, briefly summarize the book, and choosing one of the following subject areas: race, the immigrant experience, or gender, explain what this novel reveals about the early twentieth century in regards to that subject in the United States.
