1. The French and Indian War has been called "The war that made America." How is this true with regards to the wars effects on the relationship between Britain and her American Colonies? How was this war different from the numerous colonial conflicts in North America that preceded it? Explain and provide examples.
2. At the start of the revolution, few people considered the conflict a war for independence, yet within a year of the first shots being fired, that is exactly what happened. How and why did this transformation in attitude amongst Patriots take place? Explain, providing specific examples.
3. What led the founders to abandon the articles of Confederation in favor of our present system of constitutional government? What were some of the controversies and compromises that went into making our constitution?
4. Why did some of the founders, such as Thomas Jefferson, support a more democratic society while others, such as Alexander Hamilton and John Adams, support rule by established elites? How did these differing philosophies lead to the creation of the first political parties in the 1790s?
5. What were the causes of the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain? How did the war fundamentally alter the way Americans saw themselves and their place in the world?
