BONSAI, "tray planting", or PENJING are both miniature living landscapes that come from Japanese and Chinese garden design styles. Rather than the use of borrowed scenery to create larger gardens, these can focus on a single specimen shaped to a particular expression through cultivation practices. A much finer art form than the contemporary mixed color bowls or cactus and succulent gardens of western culture.
Many botanical gardens, clubs and private collectors have stewardship over very valuable specimens, remarkably old, sometimes inherited or given as dowry. If you have never been to a bonsai show, now may be the time to appreciate one.
Watching a bonsai master use the specific tools required to manipulate a bonsai can be fascinating.
