Connecting Implantable Medical Devices (IMDs):The number of IMDs implanted world-wide is growing at a rapid rate. There is a trend to wirelessly connect the IMDs to outside world for continuous data collection and health monitoring. Your research will provide an in-depth study of this new wireless networking paradigm. Your research survey report should cover as many aspects of this paradigm as possible. Some examples could be (these are just some examples to get you going, but your report should be much more comprehensive):
• Abstract
• What are IMD's
• History of IMD's
• Types of IMDS: how many different types of IMDs are already there, and how they have been increasing over the years, and what new IMDs are on the horizon; You may also consider the pseudo-IMDs, which stay only a few hours or days inside human body.
• How connection works in IMD's?
• Benefit for connecting the IMDs: what benefits are there by connecting the IMDs; we need to provide specific details acceptable to medical practitioners
• Challenges for connecting them: What are the challenges and how the existing wireless protocols and standards fail or succeed to meet those challenges; are there any new standards for this paradigm?
• Connected IMDs: which IMDs already have a mechanism to connect to the Internet via wireless (or wired) communications; what type of wireless communications (spectrum, data rate, power, etc.)
• Current market conditions
• Power issues for IMDs: such as wireless power transfer, and local energy harvesting
• Security issues: are there any security issues?
• Future developments
• Conclusion
