What are the common causes of morbidity and mortality for 48-year-old men in the United States?
The leading cause of of death for men in this age group of men is cancer 22.7% and is followed by heart disease 22.6%. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to heart attacks, is the most common heart disease in the United States. About a quarter of all heart-disease-related deaths occur in men ages 35 to 65. (CDC). According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the leading causes of cancer death in men are lung cancer, prostate cancer and colorectal cancer. ("CDC," 2019) Risk of death declined more steeply for heart disease than cancer, offset the increase in heart disease deaths, and partially offset the increase in cancer deaths resulting from demographic changes over the past 4 decades. If current trends continue, cancer will become the leading cause of death by 2020. (Weir et al., 2016)
