The War of 1812 put the U.S. in a difficulty situation. France and Britain were fighting and both asked for out continued support secretly.

This put us in a position to with choose a side or engage in a war on 2 different fronts which there was no way a young county like the U.S. with no formal military and limited resources could fight successfully or sustain.

A choice had to be made and siding with the French showed that now the U.S. was not just supporting the French but actively fighting against the British.
