Techniques for gathering and analyzing empirical data

Assignment:

Write a 1,050 to 1,400 word paper summarizing the core research elements you developed. Align these core research elements with a methodology and design.

Discuss strategies and techniques for gathering and analyzing empirical data that are aligned to the chosen methodology and design.

Note the following:

• In a qualitative study, the empirical data will come from talking to or reading transcripts of people's words. Who and what will your research involve?

• In a quantitative study, the empirical data will come from measurements of some kind. What data will you need?

Once you have identified a source of data and a technique for gathering and analyzing the data, go back and review all the other elements of your proposed research. You may need to tweak some elements further.

Part 1:

o The following section has examined the feasibility and effectiveness of the research questions designed on the topic of post-traumatic stress disorder. For identifying the viability of the research questions, the rubric on critical analysis and evaluation has been considered, which has helped in rating the question in different categories.

Research question 1: To what extent do therapy and medications help in treating the symptoms of PTSD?

Personal Response: In my opinion, the question framed by you lacks specificity. In this context, the developed question has been able to from the rational interpretation of the topic under consideration, which is related to PTSD. However, the scope of the question is wide and, therefore, the use of quantitative research would not be feasible. Therefore, the question developed by me is still in the developing stage wherein the critical analysis and evaluation of the research topic would only be feasible if the question is targeted towards a particular phenomenon, such as the type of therapies, rather than being generalized to all the possible treatments. Moreover, the question framed has been well structured according to the plausible coherent proposition made by you.

The writing competence in the context of the developed question is proficient as no grammatical or typographical errors have been encountered by me. In addition to this, the tone of the question is also academic and well aligned with the research topic under consideration. The question designed by me is not ambiguous and confusing, which is beneficial for the proper synthesis of the research purpose and topic. This research question will help in seeking a well-defined flow of information without the inclusion of the element of confusion.

Research Question 2: What are the environmental and social factors that are responsible for aggravating the symptoms of PTSD?
Personal Response: The question framed by me is highly proficient as it has covered the topic of PTSD with great specificity. The critical analysis of the environmental and social factors has further helped the implementation of both, qualitative and quantitative methods for the collection of viable and pertinent data, which is consistent with the research topic. I have also been successful in critically evaluating the relationship between the research topic under consideration and the potential audiences to which it has been directed. The probability of the research propositions has also been increased with the identification of the factors that are responsible for the occurrence of the research phenomenon. Therefore, I have been successful in designing a well-structured question, which is well-aligned with the research topic.

Part 2:

o In any research, the role of a problem statement is very important. It helps in providing a path for making the research process smoother and achievable. It keeps the research to be on track and also keeps the content aligned. In this regard, the following discussion aims to provide a problem statement on PTSD.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) cases are increasing due to various environmental and social factors, but they can be treated by therapies and medications. However, the extent to which cure is generated is still unknown. Thus, the main problem statement is to identify the extent to which the post-traumatic stress disorder can be cured. Along with this, the problem statement also highlights the major social and environmental factors that are responsible for increasing the risk of PTSD.

In generating the problem statement, based on the research questions, the various aspects related to research paradigm and research design are also considered. In this problem statement, the exploratory research design, along with interpretive paradigm is used. Interpretive paradigm is used after analyzing the qualitative literature and finally arriving at a common inference (Esteves, 2010). The problem statement will make the health care professional to discover new ways of resolving the problem of PTSD. They will make use of empirical evidence to find the unexplored areas. In this, they will try to observe the patients with PTSD of varying symptoms and from their personal senses, the residing problems and the factors that increase the risk of PTSD will be found (Goodson et al., 2013). However, if the problem remains undefined, the consequences would be the waste of time and efforts that are provided by the professionals. The findings will provide them the required area that is needed to be explored, however, the lack of findings will inhibit their innovative capacity, and they will not be able to rectify the problem due to insufficient information. Thus, the overall research problem will make the professionals discover new ways of treating PTSD symptoms so that they could save the future generation.

Part 3:

o Research in any field broadens the scope of the subject and provide insights into it so that the appropriate solutions can be generated. In this regard, the following discussion will highlight the purpose statement, goal and the research paradigm that would be conducted on post-traumatic stress disorder.

According to the study on Post-Traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the purpose statement of the study is, "The purpose of the proposed qualitative study is to identify the type of specific therapies and medications that can treat the symptoms of PTSD and will minimize the aggravation of further symptoms"

The goal of the proposed qualitative study is to make the health professionals more concerned about PTSD and to take possible future actions so that the frequency rate of the disease can be controlled easily with adequate treatment. Thus, the overall research problem will make the professionals discover new ways of treating PTSD symptoms so that they could save the future generation.

The core elements of the research proposal are perfectly aligned with the research paradigm. The paradigm chosen is interpretive paradigm that helps in drawing specific inferences about a problem (Lederman & Abell, 2015). By conducting the qualitative study on PTSD, specific inferences could be drawn so that the identification of existing deficiency in treatment patterns and the factors that are generally neglected by the patient and professionals, which trigger the disease can be analyzed. These inferences will provide deep insights into the problem and hence, will help in discovering new ways to treat PTSD.
