Provide a brief history of the song

Assignment

1) Research each tune and give a brief history of the song. For example, who was the Composer, when was it written and where was it performed, and was it a Concert or Dance work.

Glenn Miller, I've got a Gal in Kalamazoo
Tommy Dorsey, Boogie-woogie
Harry James, Boogie-woogie
Benny Goodman Why Don't You Do Right with peggy Lee
Jimmy Dorsey, Besame Mucho

2) Research each tune and give a brief history of the song. For example, who was the Composer, when was it written and where was it performed, and was it a Concert or Dance work. Then upon completion, select a song from each to these Band Leaders:

Chick Webb,
Duke Ellington,
Count Basie,
Coleman Hawkins.

3) Research each tune and as with the previous group provide a brief history of the song. Again, include the Composer, when it was composed and where was it premiered, and state if it was written for Concert or Dance.

4) There are three vocalists mentioned this the Discussion Topic above:

Ella Fitzgerald; Ivie Anderson; and Frank Sinatra.

Select a song from each soloist's discography and talk about the work and why you selected it. What did you find attractive or, as the case might be, unattractive about the arrangement or singing.

5) Research and discuss these five additional singers; Lillian Green or Lil Green; Dinah Washington; Sarah Vaughan; Bob Howard; Billy Eckstein (include clips to their songs) that headlined with various bands in the late 1930s and 40s. Listen to their singing carefully, can you detect a change in musical style? Is the direction of Jazz beginning to move away from the highly charged and energetic style of Swing to a different aesthetic? If so, what do you think was the cause of this music shift?
