Length of the mercury column in a barometer

When you lift an inverted glass from a basin of water, the glass remains filled with water, with the water in the glass above the level of the water in the basin. Calculate the maximum height of the water column that can be supported in this way, and compare with the length of the mercury column in a barometer.
