Assignment: Analysis of Art
You will write an analysis that will focus on African American artistic expression as it pertains to dance, music, visual arts, and comedy.
? Choose one of your Discovery examples.
? Summarize the characteristics of the example.
o If you are writing about art, describe the piece by noting colors, impressions, subject matter and some information of the artist.
o If you are writing about dance then note the movements of the dancers. What music is chosen, how does the dance reflect black culture.
o If you are writing about music then describe the musical qualities of the song or composition (NOT the lyrics). What are qualities? Who are the musicians.
o If you are writing about comedy then summarize the joke and take the time to describe how they tell the joke (physical movements or expressions) and why the joke is funny.
o You may also write about an artistic expression that is not explicitly mentioned (performance based art, textiles, graffiti, folk art and ceramics/sculpting, graphic arts and so on). Make sure you describe the piece and give a little background on its history.
? Relate the characteristics of your examples back to information you have learned from the class (historical, terminology, theory).
? Conclude your essay with a personal and subjective reflection. Why did you choose this example? What does it mean to you personally? How do you connect (experiences or feelings) to the topic?
Note: Do NOT focus you essay on a specific artist. Make sure you take time to describe the art piece. Include a picture or link in your essay. Your example should be unique and original. Use first person (the "I" voice) throughout the essay and show connections between ideas.
