HBSE in the News Brief Paper
To strengthen the connection between the theories and ideas presented in this course to your social work practice, you will write a 1-2 page brief paper linking a news article you have found to your choice of special issue (e.g. Work; Oppression, etc.) and a theory/concept/model from a chapter you have read in the Hutchison text. Please prepare your paper as follows:
1. Select a news article that relates to at least one of the theories or concepts presented in your assigned textbook chapter. Please select an article from a recent (no older than 1 year) "mainstream" news source such as CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS, Washington Post, The New York Times, etc. Please include a link to the article in your reference section or include it as a WORD or PDF document.
2. Start your post with a written synopsis of the current news article (suggested length: 1 paragraph, maybe 2-5 sentences).
3. Follow up on your summary of your news article with how you think the article based on one of the special issues represents at least one of the key concepts/theories in the textbook chapter (suggested length 1-2 paragraphs).
4. Conclude your paper with a reflection on how the utilization or implementation of your selected concept/theory could impact or explain the future trajectory of (for better or worse), the trend, event, or social environment depicted in your news article
Example of the content for this assignment:
Work (employment, vocation, etc.) is a central factor in adulthood. Ability/Disability is a special issue we will explore this semester.
• News article (based on issue): New York Times "Hiring People With Disabilities Is Good Business" (Dec. 27, 2018).
• Hutchison (LC), Chapters 7 (Young Adulthood) or Chapter 8 (Middle Adulthood) - pull a theory or concept from one of these chapters that supports the importance of work at this stage of life.
• Reflect on how your article intersects with your selected theory and how the trend/issue/event, etc. in your new item could impact or explain future trajectories (In short use this section to address # 3 and # 4 above).
Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:
1. The answer should be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
2. The response also includes a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student's name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
3. Also include a reference page. The Citations and references should follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.
