Look carefully at Map, "Islam and Trade in Sub-Saharan Africa, 700-1000 CE."Does this map suggest a relationship between the development of trade routes linking Africa and the Islamic world, and the development of empires? If trade was the stimulus for empire in Africa, how might that have affected African culture? In particular, how might adoption of Islamic culture have seemed to African rulers a good way to promote trade between their kingdoms and the Islamic peoples with whom they were trading? What does this suggest about the link between trade and the spread of the Islamic faith?
