For the first time a majority of americans lived in what

you cover most of the big ideas here. Many have tied America's growing urbanization as a factor in creating a national culture. By 1920...America had become what it had never been before--an urban country. For the first time, a majority of Americans lived in what can be determined as an urban setting. In such locations people had access to electricity and the radio, which helped forge the idea of a national community. Keep in mind that most of rural America would remain in the dark--literally and figuratively--until FDR's New Deal made Rural Electrification a major issue. Power companies refused to put down electric poles and string power lines in less settled areas arguing that the expense was far in excess of the potential reward. Federal intervention brought power to the countryside. You mention the idea of a national community but offer little in the way of specifics. Please provide the class with a sense of the music people were listening to, the films they were watching, etc... Fill us in in those things that American shared.
