Media Connection: Film Portrayals of Monsters

For thousands of year's evil monsters have played an important role in the world's literature. Today, monsters continue to thrive-until a hero comes along-on movie screens and televisions. You have probably enjoyed a number of frightening monster films and videos from the safety of your living room or local movie theater. You may even have your own favorite monsters-ones that were effectively presented and gave you a particularly "good scare." Read the article titled "Monsters and the Moral Imagination" for an excellent perspective on why monsters are universal elements of our storytelling.

Directions-

Open the Monsters document. Use this chart as you think about the creatures of doom and darkness that you have seen in films and videos. Include aliens from outer space and psychological human monsters, as well as the more "old-fashioned" sort. List the three movies in the first column. Then fill in the other columns with information about each monster. Then complete the second chart analyzing the monsters in Beowulf.

Read "The Head of Humbaba" and find Out what happens next.

In a word processing document, answer the following questions:

1. Enkidu is the prototype or model sidekick or companion to Gilgamesh. List three characters from contemporary film or fiction that had friends or advisors that would compare to Enkidu.

2. At the beginning of this selection, we see Enkidu speaking to Gilgamesh about his plan to confront Humbaba. What is Enkidu's purpose in this first section?

3. Gilgamesh responds that it is not time for his death. In this speech we can visualize some of the funeral customs of the people of Uruk. List three of those customs.

4. Humbaba exhibits menacing behavior toward Gilgamesh. What are some of the things Humbaba does to show his power?

5. Who is "Shamash" and what is his role in the story?

6. As Gilgamesh closes in on Humbaba, what plea does Humbaba make? Why?

7. What does Humbaba promise Gilgamesh if he is allowed to go free?

8. What does Gilgamesh say to Enkidu that reveals that he's considering freeing Humbaba?

9. When Gilgamesh and Enkidu set the head of Humbaba before Enlil and the other gods, what is Enlil's reaction?

10. What does Enlil do with the "splendors" that had belonged to Humbaba?
