You may choose to write about one of the following prompts: Discuss the detective's methods. Discuss the detective's relationship with sidekick (if applicable). Discuss the importance of the setting. Discuss how the writer presents an important theme in the novel. Option Two: You may depart, if you like, from our previous discussion prompts and write about one of the following: Discuss an especially strong or compelling character. Discuss a thrilling plot device. Discuss a symbol and how the author uses it. Discuss a literary device (foreshadowing, irony, etc) and how that device is important to the story. Discuss an important theme and how the writer presents it. Select your own topic. If you have questions about whether your topic is appropriate, then just email me. Option Two will make more sense for the Contemporary Book Club as many of the detectives in these are very different from the classic detectives of Dupin, Holmes, and Poirot. Your initial response should have a minimum of 500 words or about five fully developed paragraphs. Please remember to double space between paragraphs. The Initial post is worth 100 points. Eek! 100 points! That is a big assignment. Yes, it is. This is your time to shine. Show me your analytical skills. Show me your engagement with the text and with each other. Make me feel as though we are sitting in café, having tea or coffee, and discussing a book that we feel strongly about. You will point out specific details and examples and passages that illustrate/prove the points you are making about the text.
