Assignment: Design a Fact Sheet!

You have been given the task by a supervisor in your work setting, of putting together a one page "Fact Sheet" about a neurocognitive condition/disorder for display and distribution in your office/school.

There are many topics that have to do with neurocognitive conditions and actual disorders. Many of you probably have experience with someone who has a brain injury or illness. Anyone can be impacted by these.

Almost everyone these days has heard of brain injuries that come about as a result of sports injuries. Similarly, information about the disease of Alzheimer's and it's impact on the brain becomes more available and accessible all the time.

1. Determine what your topic for your Fact Sheet will be.

2. Define your topic clearly and concisely. A clear concise descriptive statement is all that's needed. (ex: "Shaken Baby Syndrome" would be your topic and you would then begin by defining it. "It is a serious brain injury as a result of forceful shaking of an infant.")

3. Determine your audience (ie: teens? parents? adults? teachers? caregivers?), and provide information about your selected neurocognitive condition or disorder that is appropriate for your target audience.

4. The idea of a fact sheet is to give some basic information. It is not intended to be a comprehensive document. Some basic facts that you deem important about your chosen topic, what causes it, how it impacts the brain and cognition, treatments available, and additional resources for the intended audience are required.

5. To get an idea of what you might include, go to "drugabuse.gov " drugfacts/marijuana - some of the things I like about the webpage information are that it includes
short and longterm effects on the brain...

Be sure to include the following:

1. Your topic and a clear definition

2. Basic facts about the disorder or condition - possible causes, who is likely to be impacted

3. Impact on neurological and cognitive functioning and WHY this is important, for example, in your setting, to your clients, their friends, their families?

4. Treatment facts (consider best practices), current research statement

5. Resources - where to get help and/or more information (websites? see the school counselor? an upcoming support group or psychoeducational group?)

This fact sheet is informational only. It must be presented factually and objectively.

You must cite sources throughout your Fact Sheet. These sources should be listed separately on a Resource Page that you include when you submit this assignment.

Think about yourself when you put this information together. You would likely not read something in fine print, nor would you want to read for more than a very few minutes.

The information you provide should be easy to read and understand, and should be a quick overview with facts that inform but do not overwhelm the reader.
