Determine the magnitude and nature of the stress induced in

A steel spacing bar of length 0.5 m is assembled in a structure whilst the temperature is 20°C. What will be its change in length if the temperature rises to 50°C? What will be the stress in the bar if free expansion is prevented? Take E 200 GPa and x = 12 x 10-1 °C-1.

A copper bar is rigidly fixed at its ends at a temperature of 15°C. Determine the magnitude and nature of the stress induced in the material (a) if the temperature falls to 25 °C, (b) if the temperature rises to 95°C. Take E 96 GPa and x = 17 10 1 °C 1.
