A. Choose one of the following questions below, and write an essay containing at least 1200 words using the MLA format.
B. Include at least three references, do not use Wikipedia or the textbook, The Unfinished Nation. The reference page is not included in the 1200 essay word count.
1. What were the causes of World War II? Who were the United States adversaries during the war? Explain why the atomic bombs were dropped during World War II. What were other alternatives that might have been tried, and why were they not used? In recent years, some people have questioned President Truman's motives in using the bombs. What arguments against their use have been made? Do you feel those arguments are valid? Why or Why not?
2. Explain why the stock market crash of 1929 occurred and tell how it turned into a major Depression. Describe the major ways in which the Depression affected Americans. What were some of the measures taken to end the Depression?
3. Discuss the civil rights movement for African American Americans from 1955 to 1965. Describe the challenges to Martin Luther King's leadership faced, and explain how and why these problems evolved. What success did the Civil Rights Movement enjoy under President Johnson? What happened to the unity of the Movement in 1965? In your opinion, why did this occur?
4. Explain why so many immigrants came to the United States between 1870 and 1914. Why did immigration decline in 1914? Discuss at least three problems the new arrivals encountered when they arrived in the country. Discuss some of the agencies and groups that assisted the immigrants upon their arrival. Explain some of the groups and laws that made life very difficult for them. Compare immigration in the late 19th century / early 20th century to immigration today.
