Maize grain seed structure

Miaze grain seed structure:

1. Seed coat:

It is build up of a thin layer surrounding the entire grain. This layer is made up of seed-coat and pericarp, that is, fruit wall.

2. Endosperm:

Whenever internally examined, maize grain is found comprising of two unequal parts divided by a layer termed as epithelium. The bigger part, the endosperm that is yellowish or whitish is the food storage tissue of the grain and is rich in starch. However its outermost layer has only protein and is termed as aleurone layer. On another side of the endosperm in the direction of pointed end, lies an opaque body termed as embryo.

3. Embryo:

It comprises of one large and shield shaped cotyledon. This is also termed as scutellum in the case of maize and other cereals. The axis of the embryo lies embedded in the scutellum. Axis comprises of a plumule at the upper part and the radicle at the lower end. Both the radicle and the plumule are covered in sheath. The sheath covering the plumule is termed as coleoptile and that covering the radicle is termed as coleorhiza. The cone-shaped coleoptile contains a pore at the apex via which the initial foilage leaf emerges during the germination.
