Head or Capitulum:

The major axis of the inflorescence is flattened and functions as thalamus. This bears many florets in acropetal order. The inflorescence is bounded by an involucre of bracts that are green in color and protect the young fruits and flowers.

The florets of inflorescence are much sessile and are of two kinds:

a. The tubular or disc florets and
b. The ligulate or ray florets.

Based on the kind of florets existed, the head inflo-rescence might be of two kinds: Homogamous and Heterogamous head.

Homogamous Head:

This kind exhibits florets of a single kind merely which might be ray or disc florets, example: Vernonia exhibits only disc florets and Launaea exhibits ray florets.

Heterogamous Head:

The florets existed here belong to both disc and ray type. The disc florets are existed in the centre of the thalamus whereas the ray florets radiate outwards from the margins of the thalamus. Example: Tridax, Helianthus.

Compound Head:

In Lagasca mollis, inflorescence axis is branched and each and every branch bears a head inflorescence.
