Flagellation in Bacteria

Flagellation in Bacteria:

Every spirilla, around half of the bacilli and a small number of cocci are flagellated. The flagella differ both in number and arrangement according to two common patterns.

1. In polar arrangement, the flagella are joined at one or both ends of the cell. Three sub kinds of this pattern are as follows:

a. Monotrichous:

With a single flagellum

b. Lophotrichous:

With minute bunches or tufts of flagella rising from one end.

c. Amphitrichous:

With flagella at both the poles of cell.

2. In a peritrichous arrangement, the flagella are dispersed arbitrarily over the surface of the cell.

3. Atrichous bacteria lack the flagellum.
