Donnan Equilibrium:
This was introduced by F.G. Donnan in which the fixed or indiffusible ions play a significant role. Such ions are existed on the inner side of the cell and can’t diffuse out. Whenever a cell containing fixed anions is immersed in salt solution, anions equivalent in number and charge to the fixed ions shift into the cell. To balance the negative charges of the fixed ions additional cations too move into the cell and the cell sap cation concentration becomes higher than the exterior medium. This is termed as Donnan Equilibrium.
In similar way when there are fixed cations, additional anions will accumulate from the exterior medium.
