IDEA (or International Data Encryption Algorithm) is the second version of the block cipher designed and represented by Massey and Lai. This is a 64-bit iterative block cipher with 128-bit key and eight rounds. As the cipher is not Feistel, the decryption is taken out in the similar way as encryption once the decryption subkeys have been computed from the encryption subkeys. Cipher structure was designed to be simply implemented in both hardware and software, and the security of IDEA mainly relies on the utilization of three incompatible kinds of arithmetic operations on 16-bit words. Speed of IDEA in the software is identical to that of DES.
