The IPID is Identification field of IP protocol packet header that is along with the source address uniquely identifies packet. The IPID is employed to reconstruct the packet must it be fragmented. Every fragment of the packet will then enfold the same IPID for destination device identifies them all to be simple packet.

The IPID is first and foremost device employed in the Idle Port Scanning by the hacker where he spoofs victims IP address to then employ it to scan the target network or system. Several Operating Systems generate such IPIDs in different manners.
