The propagation of action potential along axon reaches the area instantly anterior to presynaptic membrane causing its permeability to calcium ions to alter and these ions to enter cell. In presynaptic area of axon there are many neurotransmitter-repleted vesicles that by means of the exocytosis activated by calcium influx liberate the neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft. The neurotransmitters then bind to particular receptors of postsynaptic membrane. (Binding of the neurotransmitters to their receptors is reversible, that is, the neurotransmitters are not consumed after process.) With the binding of the neurotransmitters to postsynaptic receptors the permeability of postsynaptic membrane is changed and the depolarization that will lead to first action potential of postsynaptic cell begins.
