The thyroid liberates the following hormones:

a) Thyroxine (T4),

b) Triiodothyronine (T3) and

c) Calcitonin.

T3 and T4 are said to be the iodinated substances which are derived from the amino acid tyrosine. They act in order to increase the cellular metabolic rate of body (metabolism of proteins, cellular respiration, and lipids, and so on). Calcitonin stops the release of calcium cations through the bones therefore controlling the blood level of calcium.
