Mitochondria are the organelles in that the most significant part of cellular respiration takes place: the ATP production. Mitochondria are organelles enclosed through two lipid membranes. The inner membrane invaginates to the interior of organelle forming cristae which delimitate the internal space which is recognized as mitochondrial matrix and where mitochondrial DNA (or mtDNA), mitochondrial RNA (or mt RNA), mitochondrial ribosomes and respiratory enzymes can be originate. Mitochondria are plentiful in the eukaryotic cells and they are even more profuse in those cells that use more energy, like muscle cells. Since they enclose their own ribosome, DNA and RNA, mitochondria can self-reproduce.
