Diabetic patients are repeatedly advised to ingest less carbohydrate as these substances are degraded into the glucose and this molecule is then absorbed within the intestines. The goal of the dietary sugar restriction is to control the glycemia in order to manage it at the normal levels. The main complications of diabetes include tissue injuries which occur in various organs which are caused by the chronic increased blood osmolarity: in the peripheral nerves, resulting in loss of the sensitivity, increased wounds (person does not feel that tissue is being wounded and the wound expands) and muscle fatigue; in the kidneys, causing glomerular lesions which may lead to the renal failure; in the retina, resulting in the vision impairment and blindness; in the skin, as a consequence of neuropathy. Diabetes mellitus also is one of the several risk factors for the cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction, embolism and stroke.
