Major Project Overview - Text Consultants, Inc.

Project overview

In order to gain a real-world work experience, the final project will be conducted as though we were employees in a company, Text Consultants Inc. I will act as the projects manager, and you as employees will conduct your projects by working for a real client, reporting to that client as well as to the projects manager (Dr. Barrett). Your client will be the person you are working for, trying to solve a problem for them. This should not be yourself, some entity you will never meet, and preferrably not someone you are too close to (exceptions can be made on this last one if the circumstances warrant; you will need to consult with me before finalizing such a client).

The main goal of the company is to provide consulting for a variety of technical writing and web-based needs.

This page will highlight the differing tasks required for this final project.

Project goals:

  • become more aware of writing as a social act
  • understand writing as a set of contextualized processes
  • relate writing strategies to workplace contexts
  • learn effective oral presentation techniques
  • conduct and manage a long-term writing/research project
  • gain experience in writing persuasive documents
  • apply everything learned in class to a real-life project.

Remember that any questions you have about what this report should comprise, or what is needed in this report, are answered by asking the more important following question:

What is it that the reader needs? (Remember that your readers here are the projects manager and your client.)

Your tasks from this point:

The Proposal Memo:

You will inform the projects manager (Dr. Barrett) what project you will be working on. You must have talked to your client by the time you submit this proposal. You will inform the projects manager of the following:

  • What has your client told you they want you to do?
  • What do you think you can do for your client?
  • What problems do you anticipate for this project?
  • What other things does the projects manager need to know?

The planning report: You will inform the projects manager what you plan to do; see schedule for deadline. Key issues in this report will be as follows:

  • What are the main goals of this project?
  • Who will be the client?
  • What tasks do you expect to be performing?
  • When and how do you plan to perform these tasks?
  • What will you be needing in the next few weeks?
  • What else does the projects manager need to know?

Please do not tell me how you will write this report -- the issue is how you will conduct the research and execute this project!

The progress report: Once you have started on your individual projects, you will be asked to produce a progress report; consult the schedule for the deadline. This report is written to Dr. Barrett, and possibly to your client should you (or your client) deem that necessary.

  • What have you managed to do on your project?
  • What you have found regarding your client's needs or the needs of your project?
  • What sources you are researching for supplemental information in your report?
  • What is your plan of action concerning the remainder of the project?
  • What else does the projects manager need to know?

In each of the written tasks above, you will be graded on the same criteria that you have been graded on all semester, including:

  • Proper formatting of reports;
  • Proper use of tone;
  • Professional language, layout, formatting, and presentation techniques;
  • Proper use of visuals, i.e., tables, graphs, appendices, etc.;
  • Evidence of proofreading.

For the Empirical Final Report:

-Must be written like a book with

  • Cover page
  • Table of contents
  • Table of figures or illustrations
  • Executive summary
  • Front matter
  • Body/back matter

-Must have page breaks and section breaks

-A letter of transmittal addressed to your client.

-Your report needs to be written to your client and not to the Projects Manager.

-You have followed the appropriate superstructure

-You have single spaced the document

-You have used headers and subheaders

-You have provided labels for your tables or other graphics

-Your report has an abstract or Executive Summary.
