Assignment: Community Impact Speech
1. This is a background information speech that you will present prior to developing your persuasive presentation. This is a 2 minute speech worth 50 points focused on who is affected by the topic/issue. When your speech is completed, the audience should have a good understanding of the scope of the impact and the ways in which members of the community are affected by your topic/issue.
You should have an introduction, body and conclusion with transitions. The body of your speech can be organized a number of ways. You will need to consider all of the background information you are gathering and decide what information you want to emphasize as you organize your main points. For example, you can organize the information according to type of impact (economic, emotional, political, social, etc.). You can organize your information according to different groups of people affected. Of course, do not just list the groups, but also include information about how they are impacted. Please make sure you cite your sources in text and include a reference page.
You should use examples and statistics in this speech. You are welcome to use more types of supporting evidence, but must include at least these two types of support. Please label the evidence in your outline.
Remember the speech is only 2 minutes so plan and practice carefully. You want to be clear and concise.
2, This is a 2.5-3 minute speech worth 50 points. The focus of the speech is to inform the audience about two or more perspectives, opinions or viewpoints on your topic/issue. For example, you might explain two or more ideas about what causes X. Another approach would be to present 2 or more ideas of how X can be resolved. You could present the "pros and cons" regarding the topic. Whatever organization you create, remember that you are summarizing at least 2 perspectives or viewpoints from other people. The general purpose of the speech is to inform.
