Consult the Assessment and Analysis Guide: Language Development: Oral Language (McAfee & Leong, 2011) linked in the Required Studies section. Based on the information in this guide, analyze the following scenario.
You have a 4 year old English language learner who you have been observing over multiple days and in multiple situations. You notice that the child does not engage in conversations with classmates, but will occasionally use a word to indicate an item in the classroom and sometimes says please and points at classroom items. The child rarely uses more than two to three words in sequence and the words used are generally nouns.
In a two to three page analysis, address the following:
- What concerns do you have about the language development of this young learner?
- What would you like to see this child accomplish in terms of oral language development in the next two months?
- What are three specific ways you can support this young learner in the development of language?
- Support your statements with evidence from the required studies and your research.
