ASSESSMENT 1

Part A

For this assessment, you are required to fully research 4 companies in the building and construction industry and review and document your findings.

The report must contain a minimum of 1000 words. You are required to indude graphs, charts and any other documents to support your written report. Ensure the report is given to your assessor. This should be submitted in your next timetabled class.

Part B

Your assessor will provide you with the construction plans and project details for the project.
Using the details provided, you are to complete Template 1 (located at the mt.: of this assessment tool) stating the main teatures of each environmental legislation/regulation and the potential impact each may have on the project at Kanooka Grove. This should be submitted in your next timetabled class.

ASSESSMENT 2 - STUDENT INFORMATION

This information is to be handed to each student to outline the assessment requirements

Part A- Prepare an Environmental Management Plan (EMP)

Your assessor has provided you with the construction plans and project details for the project for Assessment 1 Part B.

Using the above information and the template provided, you are required to prepare an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for phase 1 (3 town houses) of this project at 108 -110 Kanooka Grove Clayton, Victoria. The plan should be at least 1500 words.

The plan must cover the following points:
- Executive summary or introduction
- Project description
- Objectives
- Contractor details
- Environmental Policy - based on the information provided, you are required to write an environmental
policy for your construction company regarding your organisation's environmental position and values
- Applicable Environmental Legislation
- Environmental management roles and responsibilities
- Organisational chart
- Environmental training
- Emergency contacts and procedures/ Emergency response plan
- Potential environmental impacts and risks
- Construction phases/timeframes
- Construction activities
- Risk assessment
- Environmental restrictions to be applied
- Environmental monitoring/ Internal and external audit schedule
- Corrective actions
- Inspection schedule
- Key people to be consulted or included in decision making
- Complaints handling
- Community consultation

This must be done on MS word or MS project using the template provided. When you have completed the plan, it is to be submitted within 5 days by email to your general manager in preparation for Part B.

Part B: Implement EMP

1. You are required to manage the implementation of the EMP you have developed above in Part A.
(a) You must first seek senior management advice in the implementation of the plan. This must be done by conducting a meeting with senior management (i.e. your assessor)
(b) Arrange a meeting for a time which is convenient to both you and your assessor
(c) During the meeting, discuss your EMP with your assessor and advise that you wish to implement it ASAP.
(d) Your assessor will discuss the EMP with you and ways in which you should implement it.
(e) You are required to write an email to your senior manager (assessor) after the meeting confirming the issues discussed (use the minutes template provided).
(f) This must be completed and submitted by the end of week 3.

2. After seeking advice on the implementation of your EMP, you are required to advise staff and contractors of their obligations in implementing and complying with the environmental planning process.
This must be done by drafting a memo advising contractors of their obligations.
This must be done using the memo template provided and is then to be attached along with this assessment.
You are required to submit Part A and Part B before commencing Part C.

Part C: Scenario

Refer to the Noise Management Plan and external/internal audit policies in the Project details document.

As Project Manager, you have been advised that complaints have been received in relation to excessive noise coming from the site after 7pm.
After investigating, you realise that contractors are working late into the evening and using concrete cutters, explosive power tools and power drills.
The complaints have also been made to the local authorities and the EPA.
What action will you take, based on the Noise Management Plan and audit polices.
Your answer must include:

PART A

Phase 1 of construction of the project at 108 - 110 Kanooka Grove Clayton, Victoria is well under way and you need to begin the planning of phase 2 (the other 3 town houses).

You are required to evaluate phase 2, determine the impact of this phase on the current environmental management plan and make the required changes to the EMP you developed in Assessment 2 (Part A).

The plan must cover the following points:

- Executive summary or introduction
- Project description
- Objectives
- Contractor details
- Environmental Policy
- Applicable Environmental Legislation
- Environmental management roles and responsibilities
- Organisational chart
- Environmental training
- Emergency contacts and procedures/ Emergency response plan

Part B

After developing the revised EMP, you are required to advise staff and stakeholders of the updates made to the plan. This must be done by drafting a memo detailing the major changes which have been made.

This must be done using the memo template provided and submitted during week 4.

Part C

Based on the risk identified in the revised EMP which you developed in Part A, you are required to develop and manage an evaluation strategy to ensure that the project remains on track in accordance with the timelines you gave in the EMP.

Your evaluation strategy must include any changes/risks which may affect the project and the actions you will take to prevent these from having an impact on the construction project. This evaluation strategy is to be submitted to your senior management.

You must use the template provided (located at the end of this assessment tool) to carry out this task. This must be submitted during week 4.

Part D

Refer to the emergency response template provided (located at the end of this assessment tool) to carry out this task.
You need to provide information on the response strategies and contacts for each potential emergency listed.
When you have completed the template, it is to be added to the EMP and implemented by issuing to all staff and contractors via email.

This must be submitted during week 4.

ASSESSMENT 4 - STUDENT INFORMATION

This information is to be handed to each student to outline the assessment requirements

Part A: Role Plays

As per your ongoing monitoring of the environmental management plan which you developed, you are required to conduct the following role plays.

You will be acting as the Project Manager and your assessor will be the contractor in each role play. You will have 10 minutes to conduct each role play.

Keep in mind the following points:
- You are the Project Manager for the six town houses construction site at 108 - 110 Kanooka Grove Clayton, Victoria.
- The importance of implementing the environmental management plan.
- You wish to ensure a safe work environment with a high priority to protecting the environment.

Scenario 1:

As a Project Manager, you are conducting a meeting with the excavating contractor, discussing the importance of the environmental management plan that relates to the site excavation.

The following must be discussed:
- how the EMP effectively identifies the position and design specification of structures and measures taken to control: sediment run-off - dirt on roads - noise and vibration - dust
- feedback mechanisms and suggestions are noted from the contractor on issues relating to the EMP to assist with meeting legal obligations
- How is the contractor complying with the requirements of the EMP?
- How and when the inspection/audit of the site to take place?
- How emergency and remediation response strategies are to be implemented to assist with compliance with the EMP and a complaint which the contractor informs you of

Scenario 2:
As a Project Manager you are conducting a tool box site meeting. Your bricklayer is cutting over 900 bricks causing the excess polluted water to drain out into the ston-nwater drains on the street.

The following must be discussed:
- The importance of the environmental management plan
- Solution/s to solve this issue
- The fines and penalties that apply for such an act
- Warning and/or contract termination for sub-contractor
- feedback mechanisms and suggestions are noted from the contractor on issues relating to the EMP to assist with meeting legal obligations

Scenario 3:

As a Project Manager you have recently conducted an audit on site to identify any non-compliances or risks. You notice that the site is extremely littered with general waste and packaging from materials being used in the build.
You have called for a meeting with the Site Foreman to discuss.

The following must be discussed:

- How general refuse produced during construction is collected, retained and transferred to an appropriate facility for disposal or recycling?

- Reasons for the non-compliance with the EMP

- The actions which need to be taken to ensure this issue is rectified immediately

- feedback mechanisms and suggestions are noted from the contractor on issues relating to the EMP to assist with meeting legal obligations

The assessor will be taking notes during the role-play to record the discussion.

Your assessor will also be using this opportunity to further question you on your knowledge of environmental management practices and processes.

He/she will be recording your responses to the questions asked.

Part B: Evaluate and change EMP

You are required to review the environmental management plan (EMP) which you have developed in assessment 3.

The review must include the strategies you identified to deal with the issues identified in role plays 1 - 3 and the suggestions the contractors made in order to improve procedures and performance.

You are required to redraft the EMP including the improvements/deficiencies addressed and the suggestions made.

You must submit a copy of the revised EMP to senior management (your assessor) during week 5.
