Yabapox
Yabapox is a disease affecting mangabeys, rhesus, cynos, vervets, stumptails, and patas monkeys. It is caused by the Yaba-like disease virus (YLDV) and Yaba monkey tumor virus (YMTV) of genus Yatapoxvirus. YLDV infection in monkey is characterized with necrotic maculopapular nodules on the arm, face, neck and trunk, which usually heal after 2-3 weeks. YMTV causes an epidermal histiocytoma consisting of mononuclear macrophages. Aerosol transmission has been proven experimentally. Transmission to humans from monkeys has not been recorded. There is a need for further clarification of the epidemiology of this disease. The virus can affect man usually after accidental skin puncture. In man lesions are similar to those seen in monkeys. Usual care should be exercised by animal handlers including wearing of protective clothing as preventive and control measures.
